2022 Zoning code adoption
This zoning reform was guided by the 2013 “Imagine Flint" Master Plan, which aimed to create a more sustainable and inclusive city. This was the first comprehensive rewrite of Flint's zoning code since 1974. The efforts of Strong Towns Flint lead to implementing the new code that introduced key changes such as legalizing accessory dwelling units (ADUs), allowing mixed-use development by right, and reducing parking requirements.

2023 Commercial Corridor Zoning Reforms
In December 2023, Flint, Michigan, implemented significant commercial corridor zoning reforms to enhance development opportunities and property values to address previous oversights in the 2022 zoning code by rezoning over 900 parcels. The advocacy by Strong Towns Flint was instrumental in bringing attention to the need for zoning changes that would facilitate investment and revitalization in Flint's commercial corridors.

I-475 $7.4 Million Transportation Alternatives Program grant application
In 2023, Strong Towns Flint played a key role in supporting MDOT’s $7.4 Million Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant application to address the historic harm caused by the I-475 corridor. The proposed project focused on reconnecting Flint’s South Saginaw, East Side, South Side and Downtown adjacent communities through improved pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, aiming to foster more equitable and accessible development. Strong Towns Flint ensured community voices were central to the process.

City Council approval of narrowing M-21 to 2 lanes
In 2024, the Flint City Council approved a proposal to narrow M-21 (aka Court Street and 5th Street) from 4 lanes to 2 from I-475 to Ann Arbor St. to enhance pedestrian safety and revitalize the surrounding neighborhoods. Strong Towns Flint played a crucial role in advocating for this transformation. The decision was part of a broader effort to reimagine Flint's transportation infrastructure in a way that prioritizes community well-being over high-speed traffic.
